Why is it that when you want to lose weight you want to eat all the things? It seems like it’s your body’s cruel way of setting you up for failure. I swear at times I feel like the donkey with the carrot dangling in its face…always reaching for it and never getting it. And in my case it’s true both ways: I’m not losing weight…and I’m not eating the damn carrot either.
It doesn’t help that my husband never stops eating. The other night, he asked for 3 glasses of wine, and a sandwich AND a Sara Lee dessert after a nice homemade dinner. Eats all the time! I eat a fraction of that and gain weight. Scratch that. I simply look at him eating all of that and I gain weight. Not fair.
We live in a little closed community that has a perfect loop for walking. That is, when the mutant Southern mosquitoes don’t track you down and make you a meal. I’d also have to walk before 7am or after 7pm because Savannah behaves like the African Savanna and it’s been in the 90s here this week. Seriously, what ever happened to Spring?
So I ran into my neighbor who has a one-month-old baby. She doesn’t even look like she’s ever had a baby, and this one was her third. I heard she likes to jog around the neighborhood, so I asked her to be my walking/jogging buddy.
Not 2 minutes later, she’s talked me into registering for a 5k as our ‘workout goal.’
What the eff did I just get myself into?
Honestly though, if I don’t have an exercise buddy, I won’t exercise. There’s no online group or iPhone app that will hold me accountable like a breathing human being by my side.
Now, please excuse me as I prepare to pass out in public as I train with my neighbor.

haha the same thing just happened to me. I hate running and my neighbor talked me into a 5k. I can’t even.

Get out. What’s with people signing newbies up for races? Baby steps people! Haha.

My fiancé and I are signing up for our first 5k too!! Good luck!
Lisette says
Wow! Nice! Thanks Nicole!

I think you just have to find an exercise you like, then you will stick with it because it’ a fun hobby or activity and not because you have to lose a few pounds.
Once you start thinking about what your body can do instead of what your body looks like, your entire world changes. Good luck with the 5K!
Lisette says
Thank you so much! You’re right, if you like what you do you’re gonna stick with it. I’m gonna also dust off my Zumba DVDs that I had to stop doing right before knee surgery.
BlushandBarbells says
ooh zumba is a lot of fun!

Do the C25K app!!! It’s the best!! I had absolutely no running experience whatsoever and it really goes at a slow pace that works best for you. And if you suck one day, you can just repeat it. It can train you to do a 5k in 8 weeks but you can take longer. Seriously life changing for me last summer. Not running now (for obvious reasons) but I definitely plan to do the program again once the baby is born!
Lisette says
Wanna know what’s funny? I had that app before my knee surgery. Then I deleted it. During my jog last night I though I should add it back. Thanks for the encouragement! Downloading it today!

Training with real people ALWAYS helps me. I can ignore the app and lie to it… no worries. It won’t be disappointed in my when I don’t do it. I wish that I had someone to be my workout buddy. I HEAR YOU! I also gain weight from looking at food my husband eats. It’s just plain NOT FAIR! :(
Lisette says
Yes! I can always lie to an app. Or just hit ‘ignore’ when it yells at me. I’m passive-aggressive like that. Haha. We haven’t trained together YET, but from what I can see as she jogs by my house with another neighbor…I have some catching up to do! She’s FAST! I’ll do the C25K for right now haha
Lindsay says
oh man you sound exactly like me! My husband has always been able to eat whatever he wants and not gain any weight (guys suck), so after watching him eat his second dinner of the night followed by some gelato, my diet is usually out the window. I’m trying to lose some weight too/get healthier and he is not making it easy on me! Best of luck to you! …I hate running lol
Hannah says
I never used to be able to run. Like, at all. The I registered for a 10k, started training with the knowledge that this wasn’t something I could weasel my way out of and boom. Four months later, 5k were a walk in the park. The beauty of running is that you see results really quickly. If you keep at it, you’ll be at your goal in no time :) Good luck and enjoy it!
Lisette says
From your lips to God! I HOPE to see results quickly! Who doesn’t love instant gratification? Thank you so much for your words of encouragement! They mean a LOT!
